No matter the industry, work uniforms go through a lot with their wearers. Sometimes, it’s simple wear and tear from general use. Other times, uniforms get put through the wringer, surviving heavy machinery, sharp objects, and other extreme conditions. It’s important to know how to repair a damaged work uniform regardless of your field.
Types of Uniform Damage and How to Repair Them
There are many different types of uniform damage and ways to go about repairing them. Two of the more common ones include:
Stitching Up Rips and Tears
Small rips and tears will commonly appear after extended use, especially with protective apparel. These are easy to fix and only require a similarly colored thread and needle. Turn the uniform inside out to get a better view and use the thread and needle to sew up the damage. Turning the uniform inside out will also help hide the stitching.

Removing Stains
Dirt, dust, grease, chemical spills, and more can stain a uniform. Unfortunately, some will cause permanent damage but there are some useful fixes that can save your uniforms. Depending on the uniform, you can remove some stains by soaking them in fabric softener for about 10 minutes with warm water, don’t rinse, and then hang it to dry. Another method begins with pre-soaking the uniform to remove the material causing stains as much as possible. Then, soak the uniform in a sink filled with warm water and some laundry detergent or stain remover for an hour. Use cold water instead here if there is blood on the uniform. Small amounts of hydrogen peroxide and/or borax are also great stain removal tools.
